Congratulations to Melanie Falcon and the Green Team Students!
Passion, fun, hard work and laughs all describe the green team students at Smoky Valley Middle School in Lindsborg, KS. This team, led by teacher Melanie Falcon, is the newest school in the state to earn the Silver Globe Award through the Kansas Green Schools of Excellence program.
To earn this recognition, the green team completed two of the five Green School Investigations; the Water Investigation and the Healthy School Environment. The Water Investigation had students' dive in and collect data on their school's water usage, where their water comes from, where it goes, water quality in their area and water conservation strategies.
The Healthy School Environment Investigation had students' exploring both their indoor and outdoor air quality, car idling zones outside of the school and even Integrated Pest Management and chemical usage in the school.
After conducting the investigations, the green team reviewed the data and compiled an action plan for each investigation and strategies to make improvements.
Way to Go Smoky Valley!
On behalf of the Kansas Association of Conservation & Environmental Education and the Kansas Green Schools Program, congratulations to the Smoky Valley Green Team and Mrs. Falcon. We all look forward to your school earning your Gold Globe Certification as you complete the Energy Investigation this spring!
