eeStories: Meet Tyler Balsters

eeStories: Tyler Balsters is a high school educator who completed KACEE’s Water In Our Community eeCredential! this year. When asked about his experience with environmental education, he shared this with us:

Tyler and his students are taking an active approach to everything he learned in the eeCourses he has taken with KACEE, and they’re getting outdoors!

“The topics and information I have learned from (KACEE) courses have helped me improve my curriculum for my biology, zoology, and environmental science classes. The Teaching and Learning Outdoors course allowed me to develop some new activities for the outdoor observations in my zoology classes, including developing a nature trail that highlights the different areas along the trail, the organisms that live in the areas, and the different environmental topics that are shown in the areas.

The environmental science class I am currently teaching has used these areas for projects on developing a food web for their area, researching a species in the area, and developing a conservation plan for their area.

…(Using the) information from the ‘Water in our Community’ course… I took my biology class outside earlier this semester to look at where water pools on campus after it floods and we looked at how the infrastructure of the school caused this to happen. I also did this activity with my environmental science class; we are going to take it a step further and (the students) will develop an action plan for our school, which will include regulating flooding.”

Thank you, Tyler, for sharing your eeStory with us!
